How syncing works

"Sync" in Dayfolio means two things happening in a row: your planner is regenerated with the latest content, and the new file is delivered to your reMarkable. Knowing the two halves makes every sync question easy to reason about.

1. Regeneration

Dayfolio reads your connected sources — calendars, task apps, the weather for your city — and rebuilds the planner PDF: events in the schedules, tasks on the Day Views, new Meeting Notes pages for the meetings that entered the window, task checks read from the pages. Handwriting is not part of the PDF: the reMarkable stores your strokes on top of the document, so a regenerated PDF slides in underneath them. Every page keeps its position, which is what keeps your notes where you wrote them — see Reached a blank "Reserved page"? Your planner is still there.

On your planner page at app.dayfolio.io the status goes through generating and then uploading. A full regeneration takes a few minutes; you can close the tab.

2. Delivery

The new PDF is uploaded to the reMarkable Cloud, replacing the previous version of the same document. Your tablet then downloads it the way it downloads any change from the cloud: when it's on Wi-Fi and the document isn't open. Because delivery goes through the cloud, it works wherever the tablet has internet — at home, in a hotel, on a hotspot — and the tablet doesn't need to be awake at the moment Dayfolio syncs; it catches up next time it connects.

When syncs happen

  • Daily automatic sync — once a day, at the hour you chose in Step 9, in your planner's time zone.

  • Sync now — as often as you like, from your planner page or from any setup step.

  • Smart Sync+ — an optional add-on that syncs many times throughout the day, for people whose calendar and tasks change during the day. See Daily sync, Sync now and Smart Sync+.

Knowing which version you're looking at

The footer on every page shows the date and time of the generation you're reading; Last synced on your planner page shows the last sync run. They're usually the same, but a sync only generates a new PDF when something changed — a Smart Sync+ run that finds nothing new moves Last synced forward without touching the footer, and your tablet still has the latest version. The footer is only out of date when it's older than a change you made or a Sync now you pressed; then the tablet hasn't downloaded the new file yet — see My planner didn't update — checklist and The footer.

What a sync never does

  • It never removes or moves your handwriting, nor the note pages you added on the tablet.

  • It never removes a Meeting Notes page that already exists.

  • It never writes to your calendar. The only things written back to an app are a task's completion when you check it off with your pen and, if you turn on Move unfinished tasks to today, the new due date of the tasks it carries forward — see Completing a task with your pen.
